Mystery Tao Size Guide

Find Your Perfect Fit
Whether you're holding a string of beads during meditation, wearing a wrist mala as a daily companion, or resting a larger mala around your neck — the right fit matters. A well-fitted piece honors both the vessel and the wearer, allowing the energy to flow without distraction. This guide will help you find your size, whether for yourself or as a thoughtful gift for another.
Step 1 — Measure Your Wrist
Your wrist measurement is the foundation for choosing any wrist-worn vessel. Take your time — a few extra seconds of attention will ensure a lifetime of comfort.
✦ Method 1 — Flexible Measuring Tape (Most Accurate)
- Hold your palm facing upward with your wrist relaxed.
- Wrap a soft measuring tape around the wrist bone — snug, but not tight, as if taking your pulse.
- Note the measurement where the tape overlaps — this is your wrist circumference.
✦ Method 2 — String or Paper Strip (No Tape Needed)
- Wrap a piece of non‑stretchy string or a thin strip of paper snugly around your wrist.
- Mark the point where it overlaps.
- Lay the string flat and measure its length with a ruler.
✦ Method 3 — Use an Existing Bracelet
- Choose a bracelet that fits you perfectly.
- Measure its inner circumference from end to end (including clasp).
- Compare the measurement to our size chart below.
Step 2 — Choose Your Fit Preference
Once you know your wrist circumference, decide how you'd like the vessel to feel on your skin:
- ✦ Snug Fit (+0.5 cm / 0.2 inches) — The bracelet hugs the wrist without slipping. Ideal for those who prefer a secure, minimalist feel.
- ✦ Comfort Fit (+1.0–1.5 cm / 0.4–0.6 inches) — The most popular choice. The bracelet moves slightly but stays in place.
- ✦ Loose Fit (+2.0 cm / 0.8 inches) — A relaxed, easy feel. Perfect for layering or for those who prefer more freedom.
✦ The Traditional Tibetan Two‑Finger Rule ✦
When wearing a wrist mala, it is traditionally considered proper for the bracelet to be loose enough to fit two fingers (index + middle) comfortably between the beads and the wrist. Not one finger (too tight, restricts circulation). Not three (too loose, slides off). Two fingers. This ancient guideline ensures both comfort during meditation and stability while counting beads. Step 3 — Wrist Mala Size Chart (Elastic Bracelets)
Most of our wrist malas are hand‑strung on durable elastic cord. Below is our recommended sizing guide based on wrist circumference, bead diameter, and number of beads. These measurements assume a comfort fit.
| Size | Wrist Circumference | Recommended Bead Size | Number of Beads | Typical For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 14 – 15 cm (5.5 – 5.9") | 6 mm or 8 mm | 21 – 23 | Petite women, slender wrists |
| S | 15 – 16.5 cm (5.9 – 6.5") | 8 mm | 21 | Average women, small men |
| M | 16.5 – 18 cm (6.5 – 7.1") | 8 mm or 10 mm | 18 – 21 | Average women, average men |
| L | 18 – 20 cm (7.1 – 7.9") | 10 mm | 21 | Larger women, average men |
| XL | 20 – 22 cm (7.9 – 8.7") | 10 mm or 12 mm | 21 – 27 | Larger men |
| XXL | 22 cm+ (8.7"+ ) | 12 mm+ | 27+ | Large wrists, custom fit |
Step 4 — Long Mala (Necklace / Meditation Beads)
Traditional 108‑bead malas are not sized like bracelets — they are designed to be worn as necklaces or wrapped multiple times around the wrist. Below is a general reference for bead size vs. overall length when worn as a necklace:
- ✦ 108 beads / 6 mm beads — Total necklace length approx. 70–75 cm (27–30 inches) — Falls near the heart area for most wearers. Ideal for women and those who prefer a lighter, more delicate mala.
- ✦ 108 beads / 8 mm beads — Total necklace length approx. 85–90 cm (33–35 inches) — Falls below the heart, near the solar plexus. The most traditional and versatile size, suitable for both meditation and daily wear. [reference:1]
- ✦ 108 beads / 10 mm beads — Total necklace length approx. 100–110 cm (39–43 inches) — Falls near the diaphragm. Usually chosen by men or those who prefer larger, more substantial beads. [reference:2]
- ✦ 54 beads / 8–10 mm beads — Half‑mala, approx. 45–55 cm (17–22 inches) — Can be worn as a shorter necklace or wrapped twice around the wrist.
- ✦ 27 beads / 8–10 mm beads — Wrist mala size, approx. 18–22 cm (7–8.6 inches) when worn as a bracelet, or can be worn as a short necklace.
✦ A Note on Necklace Length ✦
The total length of a mala necklace depends on three factors: bead diameter, number of beads, and the presence of a tassel or guru bead. If you prefer the mala to rest at a specific chakra point (throat, heart, solar plexus), please contact us — we can custom‑adjust the bead count or add extension beads to achieve your desired length.
Step 5 — Choosing Bead Size by Hand & Body Type
Beyond wrist circumference, bead diameter also influences the look and feel of the piece. Here is a general guideline based on tradition and aesthetics:
- ✦ Women (slender to average hands) — 6 mm (delicate, elegant), 8 mm (balanced, versatile), or 10 mm (bold, substantial). For many women, 8 mm offers the best combination of presence and comfort.
- ✦ Men (average to larger hands) — 8 mm (refined), 10 mm (classic, traditional), or 12 mm (bold, masculine). For most men, 10 mm is the preferred size for both meditation bead counting and daily wear. [reference:3]
- ✦ Children or very slender wrists — 4 mm or 6 mm beads, with a smaller bead count for a proportionate fit.
- ✦ For the 108‑bead mala (worn as a necklace) — Women typically prefer 6 mm or 8 mm beads; men typically prefer 8 mm or 10 mm beads. [reference:4]
✦ A Note on Multi‑Wrap Malas ✦
Some of our malas are designed to wrap 3, 4, or 5 times around the wrist. For these pieces, we recommend measuring the length of the entire strand rather than wrist circumference alone. Please refer to the individual product page for multi‑wrap sizing details, or contact us for personalized guidance.
Custom Sizing — When Standard Is Not Enough
Every wrist is unique. If your wrist measurement falls between two sizes, or if you require a specific bead count for meditation practice, we welcome custom requests. Simply add your wrist measurement (in cm or inches) and preferred fit (snug / comfort / loose) in the order notes at checkout. We will hand‑string a piece tailored exactly to your body. [reference:5]
